In order to help all pupils to achieve ‘individual excellence’ Mathematics is taught in sets from the middle of Year 7. From year 9 upwards each year group is divided into 3 sets. The aim of the subject specialists who teach all the mathematics in the school is to help pupils to enjoy the subject and to gain confidence in their own ability at problem solving. The results of this approach are shown in our success at GCSE. This summer 100% of our pupils gained A* to B grades in mathematics.
Mathematics is offered in the Sixth Form at both AS and A2 levels.
Aims of the English department
Science at Highclare is studied in five well equipped and purpose built laboratories. The emphasis is ‘achieving individual excellence’ through varied and motivating approaches to the curriculum. Our department’s external examination results are testament to the success of this approach - in 2011 our Year 10 students gained 100% pass rate at GCSE with 100% getting A* to C grades, and 66% getting A* to B grades (a year earlier than would normally be expected,) in their January Science GCSE unit paper.
General science is taught in year 7 but from year 8 upwards the pupils study separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Taught by subject specialists, through GCSE and on to Sixth Form pupils are engaged with interesting, exciting and relevant practical lessons. In the Sixth Form, Psychology is also an option.
