Bikeability At Highclare Prep

Posted: 13th June 2019

Pupils across J6 had a great time during their Bikeability course last week.  During sunnier times (!) children enjoyed the opportunity to improve their bike and road safety skills during a number of Bikeability sessions. As well as practical skills such as learning how to cycle on the road and how to signal effectively to traffic children also learnt the answers to these questions, see if you can have a go yourselves.

  • Why do you need to check the tyres on your bike? What would happen if they were flat?
  • Can you see parts of the gearing system?
  • Why is it important to keep the chain oiled?
  • How many different types of bikes can you name? Which would you choose for different purposes, such as a long ride, a speed event or performing tricks?
  • Why is it good to have lights on a bike?
  • What would you do if your bike wasn’t working properly? What do you need to check?

Bikeability courses improve a wide range of children’s skills such as the points below.

  • An 11% boost in results in standardised achievement tests has been linked to school programmes that directly improve students’ social and emotional learning.
  • Physical activity has a beneficial effect on mental health and psychological wellbeing and it helps treat clinical depression, anxiety and stress.
  • Parents say being active makes most 5 to 11-yearolds feel happier (79%), more confident (72%), and more sociable (74%); nearly all children say they like being active (93%), and are mainly motivated by having friends to join in and more activities to choose from.
  • Effective social and emotional competencies are associated with greater health and wellbeing, and better achievement.
